Robinson Township, PA (August 18, 2009) – The Forest Grove, Groveton, and Moon Run Volunteer Fire Departments all received a donation that will help prevent pets from falling victim to smoke inhalation due to fire. Invisible Fence of Western Pennsylvania donated oxygen recovery masks for pets to each of the fire departments today, and conducted equipment training sessions and demonstrations. One recovery kit was donated to each station and each kit contains three pet oxygen masks in small, medium and large sizes. “We hope that by donating oxygen mask kits that we will contribute to saving more pets and hopefully protect pet owners that may risk their own life to save a pet in a fire,” says Jack Miltz, owner, Invisible Fence of Western Pennsylvania. It is estimated that in 2006, more than 40,000 pets dies in fires, most succumbed to smoke inhalation. In most states, emergency responders are unequipped to deal with the crisis. The donation of these specially designed and potentially lifesaving animal oxygen mask sets will enable Rescue Squads to efficiently administer oxygen to a stricken animal. “We want to thank Invisible Fence for their generosity and believe that these kits will help us save more pets; we can all recall from the past where these masks would have helped save a pet,” said Chief Jack Carney, Forest Grove Volunteer Fire Department. Lightning Strike Sparks Robinson Twp. Apartment FireResident: 'I Knew Something Was Wrong'ROBINSON TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- The storm pushed through Friday with little fanfare, but it took one lightning strike to send tenants inside a Robinson Township apartment building scrambling. Firefighters said they believe the lightning bolt hit the top of the building, traveling down to the foundation. "I knew something was wrong. It was lightning and thundering. All of a sudden we heard a loud boom it shook the room a little bit so we all came out to see what was going on," said displaced resident Isici Layne. It took firefighters no more than 20 minutes to extinguish the fire caused by the strike, but the damage will last a lot longer. Everyone inside the building escaped safely, but four adults and two children were left without a home.
"There's no other evidence of any other electrical problem or gas problem or anything," said Chief Jack Carney of the Robinson Township Fire Department. Layne and Jamillea Banks said theirs homes were pretty much destroyed. "The bottom apartment, it melted up the whole floor, so we can't even go in now," said Banks. Fire crews spent extra time making sure certain hot spots were completely extinguished. The building also sustained water damage. Displaced residents will be put up in hotels.
